How hard would it be to get big numbers out of these watered down big blocks? These are still kinda cool (V8 sound, lots of torque, rumble), but they were making respectable power figures in the 60s.

Honestly I think it would be pretty easy.
You need to yank a bunch of smog controls off and let this thing BREATHE.
Heads, Cam, Intake, Carb, Exhaust aaaand street monster. If you go the route I went on the 68 Montego with Craigslist parts you can do it pretty cheap.
50 intake, ready to use
25 carb, 40 rebuild kit
250 for dual exhaust and mufflers
50 for heads, ended up selling them for 100 when I chose not to use them
=365-100= 265
Thankfully the Montego doesnt have the smog crap because it's from 68. But this little 302 is screaming with just those upgrades. I imagine the same treatment on a big block would be very effective.
